Burgau

Burgau is a small coastal village where the streets do the work before the sea appears. Narrow, steep lanes drop between white houses toward Praia do Burgau, with bougainvillea, painted doorways and tight corners giving you more than one frame before you reach the sand.

The beach sits directly below the village, backed by high, sloping cliffs. At low water it reads as a compact sandy bay; at higher tide it can shrink hard, so this is not a place to assume a broad beach will be waiting all day. Rocks and stones sit on both sides of the beach, and in summer those edges are used for snorkelling when the sea allows it.

When to go: sunset and golden hour suit Burgau well, especially from above the south coast or looking back through the village streets as the light catches the white facades. Summer brings the liveliest rhythm and can make both the beach and parking more difficult. Outside the busiest weeks, the village keeps a quieter feel than the better-known stops nearby.

Arrive by road from the N125, signed toward Burgau, then follow the road down into the village. From Lagos, the route runs toward Sagres before turning onto the local road toward Rua 25 de Abril and the beach. Buses from Lagos are also referenced, but on-site details should be checked before relying on them. Expect sloping streets, a compact centre and parking that can take patience in peak season.

Who it’s for: photographers who want a village-and-beach frame rather than only open coast. Burgau pairs well with nearby Praia de Burgau, Praia das Cabanas Velhas, Praia de Almádena and Praia da Boca do Rio for a western Algarve day built around small coves, cliffs and coastal villages.
