The Carvoeiro Cliff Walk: A Short Alternative to the Seven Hanging Valleys
The Seven Hanging Valleys trail is the longer option on this part of the central Algarve coast. It involves steeper terrain and requires a greater fitness commitment. If you have limited time, are walking with children who are not ready for a longer hike, or want a more manageable coastal walk, the Carvoeiro boardwalk is the practical choice.
The boardwalk links the town centre side of Carvoeiro with Algar Seco. It suits a short outing, although the steps and uneven rock below the boardwalk require additional care.
What You Are Walking
The Carvoeiro boardwalk follows the cliffs east of the town centre to Algar Seco, connecting sea arches, caves and outlooks. It does not extend west to Vale Centeanes. Alfanzina and Vale Centeanes are associated with the Seven Hanging Valleys route rather than this boardwalk section.
The path combines wooden boardwalk, stone steps and flagged sections. Railings protect the main exposed sections. Steps descend toward the lower cave area, where the rock is uneven and can become slippery when reached by spray.
Unlike the Seven Hanging Valleys route, this walk remains close to Carvoeiro and does not include long beach access sections.
Key points along and near the route:
- Praia do Carvoeiro: The main beach sits at the bottom of the village. Access to the walk is from the town centre side above the beach.
- Algar Seco: This area contains wave carved limestone, caves, blowholes and natural rock openings. Steps lead down from the boardwalk, but the lower terraces are uneven and unfenced.
- Vale Centeanes: This is a separate coastal stop on the Seven Hanging Valleys route, not the western endpoint of the Carvoeiro boardwalk.
Treat the boardwalk as a short return walk between the town centre and Algar Seco. Allow additional time if you descend toward the lower cave area or stop at the viewpoints.
Getting There and Parking
Carvoeiro is signed from Lagoa and the EN125. Portimão, Albufeira and Ferragudo are separate starting points by road, so check current navigation and traffic conditions before setting out.
Parking in Carvoeiro:
- Village car parks and street parking fill quickly in season. Park higher in the village and walk down if the central spaces are full.
- Street parking near the clifftop is limited, particularly during busy periods.
- Algar Seco has a small car park. Walking along the boardwalk from Carvoeiro is the fallback when it is full.
- Check locally for current parking restrictions and pricing.
If you are combining the walk with Ferragudo: Treat Ferragudo and Carvoeiro as separate stops and travel between them by road. Ferragudo is across the Arade from Portimão and is not a practical starting point for walking to the Carvoeiro boardwalk.
Accessibility and Difficulty
The main boardwalk is easy, but access becomes more demanding where steps lead toward the caves and lower rock terraces.
- The boardwalk provides the easiest route along the cliffs.
- The lower cave area involves steps and uneven rock.
- The terraces beyond the boardwalk are bare and unfenced, with slippery surfaces wherever spray reaches them.
- The route has little shade, so bring sun protection in summer.
Anyone avoiding steps or uneven ground should remain on the main boardwalk and turn back where the route no longer suits them. Families should supervise children closely near steps and cliff edges.
When to Go
Late afternoon and sunset: Sunset is the preferred time for this route. The late light warms the limestone and gives the cliffs and rock openings stronger definition.
Late morning: This can work for clear sea colour and crisp cliff detail.
Summer: The clifftop has little shade. Avoid the hottest part of the day and carry sun protection and water.
Spring is a practical season for the walk.
Combining the Walk With Ferragudo
Ferragudo is a fishing village on the east bank of the Arade, across the river from Portimão. Its harbour, clifftop church and beach approach provide a different setting from Carvoeiro.
To combine the two places:
- Explore Ferragudo as a separate stop.
- Travel by road to Carvoeiro.
- Park in Carvoeiro or at Algar Seco, then walk the boardwalk between the town centre side and Algar Seco.
This keeps the route practical and avoids treating Ferragudo and Carvoeiro as a continuous walking trail.
Honest Assessment
The Carvoeiro boardwalk is shorter and more contained than the Seven Hanging Valleys route. Its main advantage is straightforward access to clifftop views without committing to a longer coastal hike.
The main boardwalk is easy, but the lower terraces at Algar Seco require careful footing and awareness of exposed edges. Village parking fills quickly in season, so arriving earlier or parking higher in Carvoeiro can simplify the visit.
