West of Burgau the coast empties out fast, and Almádena, known to many locals as Cabanas Velhas, is one of the quiet coves that reward the detour: a curve of sand and dark rock below low cliffs, near the ruined fort that lends the beach its name. Access is by narrow road from Budens, and there are no services you can count on: come self-sufficient.

The character is western Algarve in transition: the golden softness of the Lagos coast giving way to something rockier and more Atlantic. The water is clear, the swell is a real variable, and the cliffs, though low, are the crumbling kind: keep back from edges and overhangs, and don’t expect anyone to be supervising.

Who it’s for: anyone working the Burgau to Salema back-coast who wants a cove without an audience; swimmers on calm days; photographers pairing it with the fort ruins on the headland above.
