Burgau still does the thing most Algarve villages only remember doing: it ends in a beach. The whitewashed streets run downhill and simply stop at the sand, boats sit on the old slipway, and the cove is held between low cliffs that keep the village compact and the light concentrated. Of the settlements west of Lagos, this is one where fishing village isn’t entirely past tense — and the beach works as the village’s living room.

The sand itself is modest and honest: a sheltered cove, calm in most conditions, gently shelving water, a couple of restaurants at beach level doing exactly what you hope they do. It’s not a spectacle beach — it’s an atmosphere beach, and the atmosphere is the photograph: streets funnelling down to blue water, boats in the foreground, whitewash and shadow.

When to go: late afternoon into evening, once the day-trippers thin and the slipway scene turns quietly cinematic. Summer packs the small sand fast; shoulder season gives you the village at its own pace.

Who it’s for: photographers who would rather shoot a place than a rock formation; couples basing between Lagos and Sagres; anyone who wants their swim to end at a café table with the boats still in sight.
