Salema is a reminder of what this coast was before the resorts: a fishing village whose streets run straight down to a broad band of sand, with working boats still drawn up on it. The beach is generous by western-Algarve standards — long, south-facing, and more sheltered than the Sagres beaches around the corner — and the village front gives it the rare quality of a beach with a life of its own going on behind the towels.

One aside for the curious: the rock at the cliff line bearing genuine dinosaur footprints is covered by its own listing — worth the detour once you are here, but this page is about the beach.

The photography follows the village. Boats on the sand, gear and hulls in early light, whitewash stacked above the beach, and the long curve of sand toward the dark cliffs closing each end — Salema offers working texture that the pure resort beaches simply do not have.

When to go: morning, while the light is low and the beach still belongs to the village; June and September carry the best balance of weather and room. August fills the village and its parking well beyond comfort — arrive early or walk in.

Who it’s for: photographers after fishing-village texture; families who want a real village behind their beach day; walkers — the coast path east toward Boca do Rio leaves straight from here. If nightlife is the priority, Lagos is the base, not Salema.
