No road reaches Praia da Figueira, and that single fact does all the curating. The beach lies at the mouth of a valley below the village of Figueira, west of Salema, and the way in is on foot — a walking trail from the village down the valley floor to the sand. It’s not a hard walk, but it’s long enough to filter out everyone who measures beach access in metres from the car door, so what waits at the end is a broad, south-facing beach in something close to its natural state.

There’s nothing at the bottom — no bar, no loungers, no lifeguard as a rule — and the emptiness is the entire proposition. Slopes and cliffs close off both sides, the Atlantic does its work out front, and on a weekday outside high summer you can plausibly have the whole thing to yourself.

When to go: late spring and early autumn are the sweet spot — warm enough to swim, empty enough to feel earned, kinder for the walk back up. Carry water and anything else you’ll want; there is nowhere to buy it.

Who it’s for: walkers who like a beach with a commute; couples and solitude-seekers; photographers after valley-meets-sea frames on a coast that still has a few untouched ones left. Not for anyone with a boot full of beach kit — everything comes in and out on your back.
