Named for the greatest voice Portugal ever produced: Amália Rodrigues kept her coastal retreat on the clifftop here, and the beach below the house took her name. It’s a Costa Vicentina cove in the classic wild register — dark cliffs wrapped in green, a stream dropping to the sand as a small waterfall, no development of any kind — at the very top of this coast’s Algarve run, a short drive north of Odeceixe (strictly speaking it falls just over the regional line, which bothers nobody who visits).

Reaching it is part of the character: footpaths thread down from the clifftop through dense coastal scrub, steep and loose in the final stretch, and the beach that meets you is tide-moody — generous at low water, pinched at high. The waterfall runs strongest from winter into spring; by late summer it can thin to a trickle, so if falling water is your frame, come in the green half of the year.

When to go: low tide for the sand, spring for the waterfall and flowering clifftops, late light for the west-facing drama the Vicentina coast does better than anywhere. Swim conservatively — open Atlantic, no supervision — and give the cliff bases room.

Who it’s for: Costa Vicentina completists pairing it with Odeceixe; photographers after the waterfall-on-sand frame; fado romantics who want to stand where Amália looked at the sea.
