A few minutes south of Praia de Odeceixe, down a path from the beach road, Adegas is one of Portugal’s few officially designated naturist beaches: clothing-optional by formal designation rather than local custom, and worth knowing before you wander in. It’s practical information, nothing more: the cove is used matter-of-factly by naturist regulars, and the designation is respected.

The setting is pure west coast: a small pocket of sand under dark schist cliffs, with the Atlantic doing what the Atlantic does: swell, wind, cool water, and the kind of light that makes this coastline feel a continent away from the south-coast resorts. The enclosing cliffs take some of the edge off the northerlies, but this is still Costa Vicentina swimming: bracing on the best of days. Keep back from the cliff base: the rock here sheds, and there’s no supervision.

When to go: summer and early autumn, on the calmer days; mornings before the wind builds. Outside the season it’s mostly a place for a solitary walk down and back.

Who it’s for: naturists, obviously (it’s one of the few beaches in the country formally set aside for it); and anyone based around Odeceixe who wants a quieter cove than the main beach and doesn’t mind the dress code.
