Samouqueira is one of the Costa Vicentina’s barely-signed coves, a small break in Aljezur’s dark cliff line where rock, sand and full Atlantic exposure meet with nothing added. No facilities, no lifeguards, no crowd infrastructure: this is the west coast in its default state, inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast natural park.

Expect what this shore always serves: schist and sandstone in hard layers, serious swell more days than not, and light that turns brutal-clear in the afternoon wind. Swimming is for calm days and cautious judgement (the Atlantic here does not grade on a curve), and the cliffs above are crumbling and unsupervised, so keep off their base and back from their edge.

Who it’s for: west-coast wanderers ticking off the quiet coves between the named beaches; photographers who prefer their coast raw, dark-toned and empty.
