Odeceixe and Carrapateira: Two Villages Nobody Sends You To
Odeceixe and Carrapateira are small villages in the municipality of Aljezur, set slightly inland from the western Algarve coast. Many visitors pass through without stopping, but each provides a practical base for exploring nearby public beaches and historical remains.
Odeceixe has an estuary beach shaped by the meeting of river and ocean. Near Carrapateira, archaeological remains offer a view of medieval fishing and fish processing on the Algarve coast. Both can be combined in a half-day visit, although access conditions and tides should be checked before setting out.
Odeceixe: the river mouth beach
Odeceixe sits in the municipality of Aljezur, in the valley of the Ribeira de Odeceixe, which forms the natural border between the Algarve and the Alentejo region. The village is small, and the nearby beach is the main reason to stop.
Praia de Odeceixe is a wide estuary beach where the river meets the sea. At low tide, an exposed sandbar separates shallow river water from the Atlantic side. Cliffs frame the landward edge, while the seaward side is open to the ocean.
When the river mouth is open, the river side may be calmer than the ocean side. The north bank of the river mouth has an established naturist area.
Tide matters here. The shape of the sandbar and the available swimming area change significantly with the tide. At high tide, the water reaches closer to the cliff base and the beach narrows. At low tide, more of the sandbar is exposed and parts of the river mouth become shallow. Check current tide times and local safety information before swimming.
Parking at Odeceixe: There is a car park above the beach, followed by a walk down the access road. It can fill on hot summer weekends, so arriving earlier may make access easier.
Carrapateira: the Almohad-period archaeological site
Carrapateira is also in the municipality of Aljezur, on a plateau near the western Algarve coast. Near the village are the remains of an Almohad-period fishing and fish-processing settlement.
The Almohad fishing settlement: The remains include stone tanks, walls and the structural outlines of processing buildings. Excavations took place in the 1970s and 1990s. The tanks were carved into the limestone and provide physical evidence of fishing activity on this Atlantic coastline during the medieval period.
Current access: Management and access have varied over the years. The site has at times been open, fenced off or accessible only by prior arrangement. Before making a dedicated trip, check its current status with the Câmara Municipal de Aljezur or locally in Carrapateira. When access is permitted, basic information boards may be available.
If the site is not accessible: Two nearby public beaches provide alternatives.
Praia da Bordeira: This is a long, open Atlantic beach near Carrapateira. Conditions change with the tide, swell and wind, so check current beach and sea conditions before entering the water.
Praia do Amado: This is another Atlantic beach near Carrapateira, reached by an access road. It has more visitor infrastructure than Bordeira and can be busier. Check local conditions before swimming or surfing.
Combining both villages in a half-day
Odeceixe and Carrapateira can be combined as a western Algarve circuit. Allow additional time during the summer, when road access and parking may be busier.
Morning: Start at Praia de Odeceixe. Visit around low tide if you want to see more of the sandbar, but confirm tide and safety conditions first. Allow time to walk along the beach and river mouth.
Late morning: Continue to Carrapateira and check whether the archaeological site is accessible. If it is closed, use the time for a walk at Praia da Bordeira instead.
Break: Bring water and food, particularly if you plan to spend time on the beaches.
Afternoon: Choose Praia da Bordeira or Praia do Amado for a second coastal stop. Otherwise, continue toward Sagres.
Allow a full morning or early afternoon for the circuit. Actual driving time depends on the route, traffic and parking conditions.

Combining Odeceixe and Carrapateira without a car is difficult. Regional public transport is limited and may not provide a practical direct connection between the villages and their nearby beaches. Check current timetables locally before relying on public transport.
