Restaurante Estaminé

There is one building on Ilha Deserta, and this is it. Estaminé stands alone on a bare barrier island at the southern edge of the Ria Formosa — a low timber structure on boardwalks over the sand, running on solar power, with nothing around it but dunes, sea and the longest, emptiest beach in the Faro area. You arrive by boat or you don’t arrive at all.

From the table the view is subtraction: no road, no other roofline, no clutter — lagoon and marsh on one side, open Atlantic on the other, and a boardwalk running off through the dunes toward Cabo de Santa Maria, the southernmost point of mainland Portugal. The building itself is the photograph — glass and weathered timber alone in all that horizontal emptiness. The kitchen leans on the surrounding water, which is exactly what you’d hope for out here.

When to go: build the day around the crossing. The boat from Faro through the Ria Formosa’s channels is half the experience — sandbanks, wading birds, moored fishing boats — and a midday table leaves time to walk the empty beach before the return. Check sailing times and seasonal opening before making the trip; everything out here runs on the boat schedule.
