Ilha Deserta (Barreta)

Ilha Deserta earns its name. The outermost of the barrier islands off Faro — officially Ilha da Barreta — has no town, no roads, no cars: just a long run of bare sand and dune, a line of boardwalks, a single restaurant, and the southernmost point of mainland Portugal at Cabo de Santa Maria. On a coast this developed, an empty horizon is the rarest commodity there is, and this island trades in nothing else.

The boardwalks are the photograph. They run from the small jetty across the dunes to the ocean side, clean timber lines through marram grass and sand — minimalist frames that need nothing added. Beyond them the beach runs out in both directions, and a short walk either way leaves every other visitor behind. Lagoon side: shallows, birds, moored boats. Ocean side: open Atlantic sand to the horizon.

When to go: getting here means a boat from the quay by Faro’s old town — ferries and faster catamarans cross the lagoon, with more departures in season. Summer is the easy window; the shoulder months trade convenience for even emptier sand. Check return times before you wander — missing the last boat matters here.

There’s almost no shade and no services beyond the restaurant, so carry water and sun cover. The dunes are protected: stay on the boardwalks and the beach.

Who it’s for: minimalists, dune-and-boardwalk photographers, and anyone who wants to know what the Algarve looked like before anything was built on it. Not for spontaneity — the boat schedule runs your day — but that’s the price of empty.
