Sé de Faro

The best view in Faro is from its cathedral roof. Climb the Sé’s squat medieval tower (a tight stone stair, then daylight) and the Cidade Velha resolves into a composition you can’t get at street level: terracotta rooftops packed inside the old walls, the orange trees of the Largo da Sé directly below, and beyond it all the flat silver sprawl of the Ria Formosa running out toward the barrier islands. It’s the shot that explains Faro’s geography in a single frame: town, walls, lagoon, sea.

The rooftop platform is small and the parapet close, so this is a place for deliberate frames rather than wandering: the cathedral’s own bell wall, the grid of roofs, the long horizontals of the ria. A mid-range zoom covers most of it.

When to go: the tower keeps visiting hours, so this is a daytime view: late afternoon warms the rooftops and puts texture in the tiles, while clear winter days give the sharpest lagoon horizons. Check opening times before building your day around it; entry is ticketed as part of the cathedral visit.

The cathedral itself is worth the same ticket: gilded woodwork, azulejos, and a small bone chapel tucked in the courtyard, and the orange-tree square outside is one of the Algarve’s most photogenic urban spaces.

Who it’s for: city photographers who want Faro’s establishing shot, and anyone pairing the old town with a Ria Formosa day, and this view is the map for it. Not for you if tight medieval stairs are a problem; the climb is short but narrow.
