Capela dos Ossos (Igreja do Carmo)

Behind the gilded baroque of Faro’s Igreja do Carmo waits the Algarve’s strangest interior: a small chapel whose walls are built from human skulls and bones, set in mortar with the calm logic of masonry. The Capela dos Ossos was assembled in the 19th century from the remains of Carmelite monks, and the inscription over the door makes its point without ceremony — a memento mori in a region that otherwise deals in beach light.

Photographically it’s a discipline exercise. The chapel is tiny and the light is low; you’re working close, with bone texture, repetition and a single small space. The church is the counterweight — one of the Algarve’s richest gilded interiors, and its twin-towered facade holds down one of Faro’s better squares, often with storks on top.
