This is as far south as mainland Portugal goes. Praia do Cabo de Santa Maria sits at the tip of Ilha da Barreta — better known as Ilha Deserta — a barrier island off Faro with no town, no roads and almost nothing built on it, and the beach carries the geography lightly: white sand, the Atlantic on one side, the Ria Formosa’s channels on the other, and a horizon with genuinely nothing in it.

Getting here is half the point. The island is reached by boat from Faro’s waterfront, and the crossing threads through the lagoon’s channels, sandbanks and birdlife before dropping you at the island. Once ashore, boardwalks cross the dunes, and the beach runs long enough in both directions that a ten-minute walk buys you a stretch to yourself, even in high summer.

When to go: summer for swimming in clear, clean water; spring and autumn for the lagoon crossing at its calmest and the island at its emptiest. Whatever the season, you live by the boat timetable — build the return into your plans, and carry shade and water, because the island offers very little of either.

Who it’s for: anyone who wants the southernmost point of mainland Portugal under their feet; swimmers and walkers who like their beaches stripped to sand, sea and sky; and photographers chasing minimalism — this is the Algarve with everything except geography removed.
