Praia da Ilha do Farol is the ocean-facing beach of the lighthouse end of Ilha da Culatra: a long run of pale sand with the Atlantic in front and the low village of Farol behind it. The place is reached by water, so the first photograph is often mental before it is literal — ferry or speedboat across the Ria Formosa, then the island opening into sand, small paths and white houses watched over by the lighthouse.

The strongest subject is the scale of the beach itself. The sand runs broad and open, with calm, clear water repeatedly noted as part of the appeal. This is not a tight cove or a cliff-framed Algarve beach; it is a barrier-island scene, flatter, brighter and more horizontal, where the clean line between sand and sea does much of the work.

Behind the beach, Farol gives the spot its second layer: the fishing-village edge, small paths, white houses and the lighthouse that marks this end of the island. Keep the beach as the main subject, but let the settlement explain where you are. The contrast between open sand and low island buildings is more specific than another generic sea view.

When to go: summer brings the classic beach rhythm, with people arriving for sun, water and a full day by the sea. The beach is large enough to feel spacious, and several accounts describe it as quieter than its size and setting might suggest. One practical caveat: seaweed has been reported in the afternoon, while the morning was clearer on that visit.

Access is part of the character. You arrive by ferry, speedboat or taxi boat, then continue on the island without a road approach to the beach. Who it’s for: photographers who like wide coastal scenes, barrier-island light, simple sand-and-water compositions, and a beach stop that pairs naturally with Ilha do Farol village, Praia dos Hangares, Cabo de Santa Maria or Restaurante Estaminé.
