At the western tip of Culatra island, the hamlet of Farol gathers itself around exactly what its name promises — a lighthouse, rising out of a low cluster of white cottages on the sand. It’s one of the strangest and most photogenic settlements in the Algarve: no cars, no roads, just sandy paths between walled yards, with the tower standing over everything. Beyond the houses, boardwalks cross the dunes to an ocean beach that is very often empty.

The lighthouse anchors every composition — down the sandy lanes, over cottage rooftops, behind masts in the small anchorage, or rising from the dune grass on the beach side. Circle the hamlet and the tower keeps re-entering the frame from new angles; the pleasure is in how many ways one landmark can organise a picture.

When to go: late afternoon into evening, when low light warms the white walls, the lamp starts to turn, and the day-boats have gone — the hamlet handed back to its residents. Winter strips the place down to pure structure: white, sand, sky, tower.

Ferries from Olhão serve Farol directly, and you can also walk the island over from Culatra village — flat going on sand and path, with the tower ahead of you the whole way. Carry water and sun cover; there is little between the settlements.

Who it’s for: photographers who love isolated structures and graphic simplicity, lighthouse collectors, and anyone chasing the end-of-the-line feeling — this is where the island, and the day, run out.
