The name gives it away before you arrive: Praia Verde is the green beach, and the green is a canopy of umbrella pines rolling over the dune behind the sand. You come down through the trees on a boardwalk, and the view from the top of the dune — pine green, pale sand, the flat blue of the Sotavento sea — is the eastern Algarve in one frame.

This is a different Algarve from the postcard cliffs. No golden stacks, no caves — just a long, wide band of sand running unbroken toward Altura in one direction and Monte Gordo in the other, with some of the warmest, calmest water in the country in front of it. The sea floor slopes gently, the swell rarely amounts to much, and the whole beach breathes at a slower rhythm than the west.

When to go: summer is the obvious season — this coast is built for long swimming days — but the beach is arguably at its photographic best off-season, when the sand empties and the light goes low and clean across the dune. Mornings give you the pines and the boardwalk before anyone else does.

Who it’s for: families who rank warm, safe water above drama; anyone staying between Tavira and the Spanish border; photographers after the quieter, flatter, greener face of the Algarve — the one the cliff coast never shows.
