The eastern Algarve doesn’t do cliffs, and Praia da Alagoa is the proof of what it does instead: a wide, flat run of pale sand in front of the resort village of Altura, backed by low dunes rather than rock, with water that arrives warmer and calmer than anywhere west of Faro. This is the sotavento formula — no drama, plenty of room — and Alagoa is one of its most straightforward expressions.
The beach works the way a village beach should. Boardwalks cross the dunes, the sand runs wide enough that even August finds space eventually, and the sea shelves gently — children can wade a long way out before anyone worries. What you give up is the postcard geology; the backdrop is dune grass and the low white spread of Altura, not ochre stacks.
When to go: summer is what it’s built for — this is warm-water swimming country, and the east coast keeps its heat into September. Out of season it turns into a long, empty walking beach with Spain hazy down the coast.
Who it’s for: families who rank water temperature over scenery; anyone based in the eastern Algarve wanting an uncomplicated sand day. Photographers will find it a minimalist beach — dune lines, long horizontals, and not much else, which is either a limitation or the entire point.
