Praia da Lota

The east of the Algarve doesn’t do cliffs, and Praia da Lota is what it does instead: a wide, flat run of golden sand just east of Manta Rota, with the warmest, calmest sea in the region and a horizon with nothing in the way. There’s no headland to frame and no grotto to hunt — the subject here is space, and the way light sits on shallow water that stays swimmable long after the west coast has turned cold.

The beach works as a quieter stand-in for Manta Rota next door: same sand, same gentle shelf, fewer towels. The sand runs unbroken in both directions — west through Manta Rota toward the ria and Cacela Velha, east toward Altura — which makes this one of the better long-walk beaches in the region.

When to go: summer is the obvious season for swimming, but photographers get more from the edges of the day — sunrise comes up over open water here, which the cliff coast can’t offer, and low light raking across the flats is the shot. High summer brings a steady cross-border crowd up from Spain, though the beach absorbs it.

Who it’s for: families who want warm, safe water; walkers and sunrise photographers; anyone overdosed on golden-cliff coves who needs the palate cleanser — this is the Algarve at its flattest and calmest, and that’s the point.
