The eastern Algarve doesn’t do cliffs, and Praia do Cabeço is the argument for why that doesn’t matter. This is a long, flat run of pale sand between Altura and Praia Verde, backed by low dunes and umbrella pines instead of ochre rock, and in front of it, some of the warmest, calmest sea the Algarve has to offer. The drama here is horizontal: space, light, and a horizon with nothing on it.

Because it sits between two better-known beaches, Cabeço stays noticeably quieter than either. Walk a few minutes along the sand in either direction and you can have a stretch mostly to yourself even in summer, which is not something the central Algarve offers at any price.

When to go: summer is the obvious season, since the sea this far east is genuinely swimmable in a way the west never is, but the flat, open geography makes it a fine winter walking beach too. For photographs, come at first or last light, when low sun rakes across the dunes; midday here is bright, flat and featureless.

Who it’s for: swimmers who want warm water without a resort backdrop; families who prefer space to services; photographers working with dunes, pines and minimalism rather than rock arches. If you need a cliff in the frame, look west. This is the other Algarve.
