Ferragudo’s big beach faces the river, not the open sea. Praia Grande stretches along the east bank of the Arade estuary, looking straight across the water at Portimão and Praia da Rocha, and the breakwater at its southern end takes the punch out of the Atlantic: so the water is calm, flat and family-grade, and the beach is broad enough to earn the name.
The photogenic anchor is the Castelo de São João do Arade, the fort rising straight off the sand at the northern end (privately owned, so you shoot it, you don’t visit it). With Ferragudo’s white village stacked up behind, it gives this beach a composition most river beaches can’t touch.
Honesty first: across the water is working Portimão: apartment blocks, cranes, marina traffic. Some people find the urban panorama part of the charm; purists won’t.
When to go: late in the day, when low sun comes across the estuary and lights the fort and the village behind it. Summer weekends fill it with local families: it’s Ferragudo’s beach before it’s anyone else’s.
Who it’s for: families who want warm, calm water; photographers after the fort-and-village frame; and anyone staying in Ferragudo; the walk from the village square to the sand takes minutes.
