Praia do Torrado is one of the quiet ones — a small, cliff-backed cove on the rocky coast east of Ferragudo, in the orbit of the Ponta do Altar headland, reached on foot along clifftop tracks rather than by anything resembling infrastructure. There are no services and no easy way down; what you get in exchange is ochre rock, clear water and a fair chance of having the place to yourself outside high summer.

Treat the cliffs seriously: this coast sheds rock, the cove is backed by unstable faces, and there is no lifeguard cover — keep back from the cliff base and don’t swim alone in any kind of sea.

When to go: calm days and low tide, which give the small beach its best footprint. Who it’s for: walkers exploring the coast between Ferragudo and Carvoeiro who want a swim stop away from the crowds — not a destination to build a day around.
