Pintadinho faces the wrong way, and that’s its charm. Tucked on the Ferragudo side of the Arade river mouth, it looks west across the water at Praia da Rocha’s high-rises and the traffic of the harbour entrance, an urban panorama most Algarve coves would kill to avoid, and exactly what makes this one distinctive. Fishing boats, sailboats and the odd cruise ship slide past in front of your towel; across the river, Portimão glitters.

The beach itself is a compact wedge of sand under low gold cliffs, with the Ponta do Altar lighthouse a short walk along the headland, and the clifftop path toward it serves up the better compositions, looking back over the cove and out along the coast toward Ferragudo’s quieter neighbours. Sitting inside the river mouth, the water is usually tamer here than on the open coast.

When to go: evening, without much argument. The westerly outlook means the sun goes down across the water here, with Praia da Rocha’s skyline drifting into silhouette, a frame the south coast’s east-facing coves can’t produce.

Who it’s for: sunset photographers who want water under the sun, not cliff; Ferragudo locals’ guests (this is the village’s beach of choice); anyone who finds a working river mouth more interesting than another empty horizon.
