Caneiros is Ferragudo’s out-of-town beach, and the one locals will name when pressed for a favourite on this side of the Arade. It’s a generous wedge of sand backed by ochre cliffs, closed off at its eastern end by the headland of Ponta do Altar — lighthouse on top, sculpted rock below — with clear, usually well-behaved water in between.
The setting does the photographic work. The cliff line runs warm-toned and layered, rock outcrops stand in the shallows for foreground duty, and the short walk out toward Ponta do Altar delivers the elevated frames back across the bay. Boats anchor off the beach all summer, which either ruins your seascape or makes it, depending on taste.
When to go: mornings for empty sand and glassy water inside the headland’s shelter; late afternoon for warm light on the cliffs. High summer is properly busy — this is a known quantity with a serviced beach and a famous lunch spot — but spring and autumn give you the same geology in peace.
Who it’s for: families wanting a serviced, sheltered beach away from Praia da Rocha’s scale; photographers collecting the Ponta do Altar frames from sand level and above; long-lunch people — the beach has that institution too, and it books out for a reason.
