Every famous beach needs an understudy, and Pinhão is Dona Ana’s. It sits a few minutes before its celebrated neighbour on the road out of Lagos — same golden cliffs, same sculpted stacks and clear green water, at maybe a tenth of the visibility. A staircase brings you down the cliff to a small pocket of sand broken by rock outcrops, with arches and stacks close enough to wade around.
Its smallness is the deal. There are no services worth planning around, the sand shrinks hard at high tide, and a few dozen people make it feel full — but on a June morning when Dona Ana’s viewpoint already has a queue, Pinhão can be near-empty with identical geology in the frame.
When to go: morning, on a falling tide. The cove catches early light like the rest of this run of coast, and low water opens sand and passages around the rocks that simply aren’t there at high tide. In August, treat it as an early-hours beach and surrender it by noon.
Who it’s for: Lagos-based visitors who want the golden-cliff experience without engineering a crowd-free frame; photographers using it as the quiet stand-in for Dona Ana’s rock architecture; anyone walking the clifftop toward Ponta da Piedade with an hour to spare.
