Praia dos Estudantes

There aren’t many beaches anywhere with their own bridge, and that’s the whole story here: a small stone arch spanning the gap between the cliff and a sea stack, hanging above the sand like a prop from a costume drama. It looks Roman. It isn’t — the bridge is a much later flourish, built as private access to the top of the stack — but the camera doesn’t care about the paperwork. Framed from the sand with the cove walls closing in behind it, it’s one of the most distinctive compositions in Lagos.

The cove itself is a tight pocket right below central Lagos, next to Praia da Batata, and the two connect through a rock tunnel when the tide is low enough. That’s the detail that decides your visit: at low water you can wander between the coves and line up the bridge from angles the high-tide crowd never sees; as the water comes up, the sand shrinks and the connections close.

When to go: work the tide, not the clock — a falling tide gives you the most sand and the tunnel route. The cove is south-facing, so it holds sun for most of the day, and early visits mean fewer swimmers under your arch.

Who it’s for: photographers after a frame that doesn’t look like every other Algarve cove; anyone staying in Lagos with half a spare morning — it’s below the town, not beyond it; tide-watchers who enjoy a beach that changes shape twice a day.
