Forte da Ponta da Bandeira

Most harbour forts glare down from a hill; Lagos’s practically sits in the water. The Forte da Ponta da Bandeira is a squat, four-square 17th-century gun platform planted at the harbour mouth, reached over a small drawbridge, with the sea working the rocks directly below its walls. It’s compact, photogenic and absurdly conveniently placed — you’ll walk past it on the Lagos waterfront whether you meant to or not.

The best pictures are from outside. The classic frame takes in the drawbridge and the honey-toned walls against the water; walk around the harbour mouth or across the channel and you can set the fort against the sea or against the town, depending on the light. Inside — it’s ticketed — there’s a small chapel and rampart views over the beach and the start of the golden cliffs, pleasant rather than essential.

When to go: golden hour, when the low sun warms the stonework and the waterfront crowds soften into silhouettes. Blue hour is the sleeper — fort floodlit, sky going navy, town lights strung out behind. Summer middays flatten it into a beige box; give those a miss.
