Meia Praia’s four-kilometre arc gets emptier the further you walk from Lagos, and São Roque is the name of the far end — the eastern reach of the same enormous sweep of sand, out toward the mouth of the Alvor estuary. Also signed simply as part of Meia Praia, it’s less a separate beach than the point where the arc stops feeling like a town beach at all: flat, wide, dune-backed, with the railway line running quietly behind and the Monchique hills stacked up in the distance.

Space is the entire proposition. Even in August, when the Lagos end is packed to the boardwalk, out here the towels sit tens of metres apart, and the long, shallow shelf leaves acres of mirror-wet sand at low tide — the kind of foreground the cliff coves can’t produce. Toward the estuary mouth the wind picks up and kites often own the sky.

When to go: low tide for the sand-mirror; late afternoon light comes long and low across the bay toward Lagos. Wind is a genuine factor — this side of the bay catches more of it than the sheltered coves, which is exactly why the kite crowd comes.

Who it’s for: walkers and runners — this is one of the Algarve’s best long flat beach miles; photographers working reflections and minimalism; kitesurf spectators; anyone allergic to competing for towel space.
