Some beaches are about the sand; Camilo is about the way down. A wooden staircase ribbons down the cliff face in tight switchbacks, and the view from the top — golden rock, two small pockets of sand, water so clear the boats look parked on glass — is the photograph before you’ve taken a step. Half the people at the railing never go further, and honestly, the top is the shot.

Down at the bottom, the cove is split in two by a rock outcrop, with a tunnel carved through so you can walk between the halves. It’s a small beach, and it behaves like one: intimate at nine in the morning, elbow-to-towel by noon in summer. This is not where you come to spread out. It’s where you come because the composition — staircase, cliffs, twin coves — is one of the tightest in the Algarve.

When to go: mornings, without question. The cove faces southeast, so early sun switches the water on to full turquoise while the staircase is still quiet, and you’ll actually get frames without a procession in them. Shoulder season is this beach at its best; August is a squeeze.

Who it’s for: photographers who want the staircase frame everyone recognises; couples and early risers who like their beaches small and cinematic; anyone already headed to Ponta da Piedade — it’s on the same road, and skipping it would be strange.

Photography Notes

  • Shooting Notes
The classic frame is from the top of the staircase, looking down the switchbacks to the double cove. The rock tunnel between the two beach sections is worth a frame of its own.
  • Light & Sun Notes
Southeast-facing — morning sun lights the water to full turquoise before the crowds thicken; midday goes flat.
  • Conditions
A small beach that shrinks fast at high tide and fills fast by mid-morning in summer.
