Praia de Monte Clérigo is a west-coast beach near Aljezur, nestled between dramatic cliffs and accessible via a scenic descent through pine forest. It’s popular with surfers and families alike, offering both powerful Atlantic waves and calmer sections near the river mouth.

The beach faces west directly into the Atlantic, making it one of the Algarve’s best sunset beaches. The contrast between the dark cliff faces, golden sand, and blue water creates photographer-friendly scenes year-round. A small river meets the ocean at the southern end, creating calm pools suitable for children.

Best time to visit: spring (March–May) is best for walking, with wildflowers on the clifftops and fewer crowds. Summer is the most crowded and best for surfing — parking fills early. The shoulder seasons offer the ideal balance of weather and solitude.

Surfing gets consistent Atlantic swell, suitable for intermediate-plus surfers in bigger conditions. Swimming is safer in the southern section near the river mouth — beware strong currents elsewhere. Cliff walking is rewarding too: paths along the clifftops connect to neighboring beaches.

Check tide times — the beach shrinks significantly at high tide. There are no facilities outside the summer season, so bring water and snacks. Strong currents mean swimming only in designated safe zones. The wind picks up in the afternoon; mornings are calmer.

Nearby: Praia da Amoreira (5 minutes north, a river beach), Porto de Mós (10 minutes south, another west-coast beach), and Aljezur town (10 minutes inland, for restaurants and supplies).
