Praia da Amoreira

Praia da Amoreira is a beach with two moods sharing one address. The Aljezur river arrives here after wandering its green valley, and where it meets the Atlantic the landscape opens into the west coast’s best estuary scene: a broad dune field, sandbanks braiding through shallow water, and surf running white beyond the river mouth. At low tide the sandbanks surface and the whole place turns graphic — channels, ripples and reflections doing the compositional work for you.

Like the river beach at Odeceixe up the coast, the split personality is practical as well as photogenic: the river side is calm and shallow enough for children and long lazy floats, while the ocean side is real west-coast Atlantic — powerful, cold and not to be taken casually.

When to go: work the tide, not the clock — a dropping tide exposes the sandbanks and gives the river mouth its patterns, and late-day light rakes across the dunes and wet sand. Spring keeps the valley green behind the beach; summer brings warmth, wind and families in roughly equal measure.

The dunes deserve care: they’re held together by fragile vegetation, so shoot them from the beach and the paths rather than walking the grass flat.

Who it’s for: photographers who prefer patterns to postcards, families using the river as a natural paddling pool, and coastal walkers — the clifftops south toward Monte Clérigo carry a fine stretch of path. The surf side delivers the drama; the river keeps the peace.
