Castelo de Aljezur

There isn’t much castle left at Castelo de Aljezur — a ring of low walls, a cistern, the stub of a round tower — and it doesn’t matter. What you climb for is the arrangement: the old town’s white houses stacked down the hillside directly below, the flat green valley of the Aljezur river running toward the sea, and the folds of the serra closing the frame inland. Tenth-century Moorish origins, one of the last strongholds in the Algarve to fall in the Reconquista — but as a photographic subject it’s essentially a balcony with history attached.

The shot is the town-and-valley layering. From the walls you look almost straight down onto rooftops, and the valley reads like a green river through the frame — in low light the whitewash glows while the valley holds shadow. Turn around and the view inland is all ridgelines. A short tele isolates the stacked houses; something wider takes the whole amphitheatre.

When to go: spring, without question — winter rain keeps the valley intensely green into late spring, and the light stays soft later into the morning than on the coast. Summer flattens the valley to straw. On some mornings coastal fog fills the low ground and the town pokes through it, which is worth the early alarm.

The climb from town is short and steep through the lanes, the site is open and free, and it’s rarely more than a handful of people.

Who it’s for: photographers who want the west coast’s inland face — village texture and valley greens instead of cliffs and surf. Pair it with Odeceixe or Amoreira for a full Aljezur day.
