Praia da Rocha is the Algarve’s big-gesture beach: a quarter-hour of walking from one end to the other, sand deep enough to lose a small festival in, high-rise Portimão stacked along the clifftop above, and the Arade river mouth closing the eastern end at the old fortress. Subtle it is not, and it has never pretended otherwise.

Two things make it more interesting to shoot than its resort reputation suggests. At the western end, the sand runs in among ochre stacks and blades of rock below the Três Castelos headland — the headland viewpoint is a spot of its own — and at low sun those stacks become the beach’s most-photographed corner. At the eastern end, the fortress and the long jetty at the river mouth give you structure, fishing boats and harbour traffic against open water.

Honesty about the middle: it is a huge, flat, serviced urban beach with a boardwalk, bars and a wall of buildings behind it. In August it absorbs enormous crowds — that absorption being the genuine advantage of all this width.

When to go: the ends of the day, always — low light gives the western stacks their colour and empties the middle distance. Off-season the beach turns cinematic: storm light, spray off the jetty, and a scale that dwarfs the few people on it.

Who it’s for: everyone at least once — this is the western Algarve’s defining resort beach. Photographers should treat the western rocks and the fortress end as the subjects, and the kilometre between them as the walk.
