Praia da Rocha is the Algarve’s big-resort beach — high-rises, esplanade, summer crowds — and none of that matters from the east cliff, because the miradouro looks straight down the full sweep: a broad run of golden sand punctuated by freestanding stacks and buttresses, with the cliff line dissolving into haze toward the west. It is one of the region’s great scale shots, and it costs nothing but the walk to the railing.

What makes the frame work is the punctuation. The rocks that gave the beach its name sit scattered across the sand like set pieces, and from above they read as graphic shapes against the beach — strongest in low light, when each stack throws a long shadow down the sand.

When to go: sunset, without much argument. The view faces west along the coast, so the light comes down the length of the beach, the stacks rim-light, and the sky does the rest. Summer evenings mean sharing the railing with plenty of phones; winter sunsets can be nearly private, and the storm light after a front clears is the underrated version.

Practical texture: this is an urban viewpoint — level access near the eastern end of the esplanade by the fortress, cafés a short walk away, no fitness requirement whatsoever. It pairs naturally with the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina terrace next door and Ferragudo across the river.

Who it’s for: photographers who want maximum coastline per minute of effort. Anyone staying in Portimão or Praia da Rocha with one evening to spend. Travellers who dismissed Praia da Rocha as pure resort — the view from up here is the argument for a second opinion.
