Três Castelos is where Praia da Rocha stops being a resort beach and remembers it has geology. Named for the trio of castle-like rock towers that mark it off from the main strand, it runs west of the big beach as sandy sections between ochre stacks and cliffs — connected to Praia da Rocha at sand level, but with a different character entirely: more rock than promenade, more shadow and shape than beach-bar sprawl.

The stacks are the photograph. From the miradouro above you get the classic looking-down frame of towers, sand and surf; at beach level the formations give you foregrounds Praia da Rocha’s open sand can’t. Late light is when the sandstone earns its keep.

When to go: late afternoon into sunset for the warm rock; low tide if you want to wander between the sections without wet feet. Summer brings a steady spill-over crowd from Praia da Rocha, but it thins the further west you go.

Who it’s for: photographers who came to Portimão for rock stacks rather than nightlife; Praia da Rocha guests who walk five minutes west and can’t believe the difference; families happy with an urban-adjacent beach that still looks wild in a tight frame.
