Praia do Amado (Portimão)

First, the disambiguation: this is not the Praia do Amado surfers know — that one is the big board-riding beach up at Carrapateira on the west coast. Portimão’s Amado is its opposite in almost every way: a small cove on the sculpted sandstone stretch between Alvor and Praia do Vau, where the coast breaks into ochre stacks, tunnels and pocket beaches rather than long Atlantic sand.

This stretch — Três Irmãos, Prainha and their satellite coves — is some of the most photogenic rock on the south coast, honeycombed and warm-toned, and Amado is one of its quieter pockets. The pleasures are close-range ones: rock windows, narrow passages between formations at low tide, clear water against golden stone. At high water the sand shrinks to slivers, so the tide table matters more than the clock here.

When to go: low tide, ideally paired with late-afternoon light, when the sandstone goes amber and the passages between coves open up. Summer mornings are the quiet shift.
