Praia do Carvalho: The Pocket Beach Beneath a Hidden Cliff Stair in Lagoa
Praia do Carvalho is one of those Algarve beaches that looks almost fictional the first time you reach it. The access is through a hand-cut tunnel in the limestone cliff, with narrow stair steps worn smooth by decades of feet. You emerge from the rock into a compact cove of golden sand, framed by steep walls and sea arches that block much of the outside world.
Why this place matters
Unlike bigger beaches nearby, Praia do Carvalho feels enclosed and self-contained. In shoulder season, especially April through early June, it offers calm water and a more protected swimming spot than many exposed west-coast locations. The cliffs also make it a useful stop for low-wind morning visits when stronger gusts affect open beaches.
Access and logistics
- **By car:** Follow signs from Carvoeiro toward Benagil and Carvalho. There is a small free parking area above the cliff, but spaces are limited.
- **On foot:** The Seven Hanging Valleys route passes nearby, so Carvalho can be used as a segment stop between Benagil and Carvoeiro.
- **Best arrival window:** Before 10:00 to avoid parking pressure and midday crowding.
Swim and shoreline notes
Water clarity is usually excellent in settled weather. The beach is small, so usable sand shrinks at high tide. At lower tide, rock shelves and cave edges become visible and are useful for short exploratory walks.
Bring water and shade. There are no reliable year-round services directly on the beach.
Short walking option
A practical half-day plan is to park above Praia do Carvalho, descend for an early swim or photo session, then continue on the cliff path toward Alfanzina lighthouse viewpoints before looping back. This gives both beach and high-coast perspectives without needing a full-day hike.
Local safety note
The tunnel stairs can be slippery from humidity and sand, especially early morning. Use grippy footwear and keep one hand free when descending. Avoid standing directly beneath unstable cliff sections after heavy rain or strong swell days.
