Taberna do 16 is a warm, welcoming restaurant in Vila Real de Santo António that feels like a local find the moment you sit down—especially on a bright day when the outdoor tables are calling. The vibe is relaxed and friendly, with an attractive interior if you prefer to dine inside, and a menu that balances comforting Portuguese flavours with a few tempting surprises.
What stands out most is the kitchen’s confidence with slow-cooked dishes and seafood starters. Many diners rave about baby squid to begin, followed by rich, meltingly tender pork cheeks—often described as so soft they practically fall apart. If you like traditional Portuguese plates, bacalhau à brás is another crowd-pleaser: flavourful, well-seasoned, and the kind of dish that keeps you scraping the plate.
Service adds to the easygoing experience. Guests commonly mention being greeted by staff who can explain the menu clearly in both English and Portuguese, which makes ordering simple even if you’re new to the cuisine. You may notice bread and olives placed on the table at the start—tasty for nibbling while you decide—just note that they’re typically added to the bill, so you can always decline if you’d rather skip.
When it’s busy, the pacing can be leisurely, but that fits the taberna style: food cooked properly, enjoyed slowly, and best paired with good conversation. If you’re looking for a Portuguese taberna with a comfortable ambience, thoughtful hospitality, and dishes that feel genuinely cared for, Taberna do 16 is an excellent choice.

in the last weekEspaço interior pequeno, mas acolhedor.
