Torre de Aspa is the top of the southwest coast — around 150 metres of cliff, the highest point on this whole run of Atlantic edge, marked by nothing more ceremonial than a stone geodesic monument in the scrub west of Vila do Bispo. There is no café, no railing, no coach park. What there is: the west coast laid out at your feet, from the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente in the south to the dark sweep of Castelejo and Cordoama running north.

The approach is part of the point. Tracks cross the flat plateau through low scrub — in spring it flowers and the air smells of cistus — and then the land simply stops. The drop from the marker to the sea is abrupt and unfenced, and the scale of it doesn’t register until you’re standing there. The wind here is not decorative; keep a sensible distance from the edge.

When to go: sunset is the obvious answer and the correct one — the sun goes down over open Atlantic, and the cliff line to the north catches the last warm light. Clear winter days bring the sharpest air and the longest views; summer afternoons bring haze and the strongest wind.

Who it’s for: photographers who want the elevated west-coast frame that rarely gets posted, walkers who like a destination with a number attached, and anyone allergic to viewpoints with tour buses. Not one for vertigo — the edge is real and nobody has softened it.
