Miradouro da Cordoama

There are viewpoints you earn and viewpoints you’re simply given. The Miradouro da Cordoama is the second kind — a paved road out of Vila do Bispo crosses the plateau and delivers you, no effort required, to the best single view on this stretch of the west coast: the dark cliff line dropping away below, Praia da Cordoama directly beneath, and the sand running north toward Castelejo in one long wild sweep with Atlantic white noise the whole way along it.

It’s a working piece of sky, too — the cliff edge here is a known paragliding launch, and on the right afternoon you’ll have gliders hanging in the frame above the surf, which either makes the shot or ruins it depending on your taste.

When to go: late afternoon into sunset. The coast faces west, the light comes straight off the ocean, and on days when sea mist hangs over the beach the whole scene turns into layered monochrome — arguably better for photography than the postcard-blue days. Mornings tend to be flat here; this is an end-of-day place.

The wind deserves its own sentence: this plateau catches everything the Atlantic sends. Bring a layer even in August, and keep a grip on tripods and hats near the edge.
