The tarmac ends and the west coast begins. Praia da Barriga is the wilder sibling in the run of beaches below Vila do Bispo — past the turn-offs for Castelejo and Cordoama, at the end of its own dirt track — and it keeps the same ingredients: dark schist cliffs, hard Atlantic light, serious surf, and a scale that makes people in photographs look like punctuation.

What the extra kilometres of track buy you is subtraction. No development, no services, and a fraction of the visitors its neighbours get; in low season you may have the whole thing to yourself. Swimming is for the confident and the informed — this is open west-coast Atlantic with real waves and real currents, not cove water.

When to go: evening, no contest. The beach faces due west, the cliffs go copper in the last hour, and the sun drops straight into the sea — this stretch is one of the Algarve’s honest sunset arenas. Big winter swells turn it into pure spectacle from a safe distance.

Who it’s for: surfers, west-coast loyalists, photographers who prefer slate and spray to turquoise, and anyone who believes a beach improves with every service it lacks. Think about your car’s clearance before committing to the track after rain.
