Vale Covo is a pocket cove in the cliffs just outside Carvoeiro, best known for the sea cave that burrows into its rock (the kind of dark-mouthed grotto this coast specialises in) and for the resort hotel that now stands on the clifftop above. The cove itself is small, rocky-edged and unserviced, and it all but disappears at high tide.
The cliffs here are the standard Lagoa warning made vivid: undercut, crumbly and actively eroding. Keep away from the base, stay out of the cave mouth in any swell, and don’t count on supervision, because there is none. Access arrangements around the hotel have changed over the years. Scout the way down before committing to it.
When to go: calm seas and low tide, full stop.
Who it’s for: cave-hunters working the Carvoeiro cliff line who want a frame the crowds at Algar Seco never reach.
