Praia de Vale de Centeanes

Praia de Vale de Centeanes is two things at once: a proper cliff-backed swimming beach, and the front door of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail — the clifftop walk that strings together the most photographed coastline in the Algarve. That double identity means you can treat it as a destination or a launch pad, and it rewards both.

The beach itself sits at the bottom of a long stairway, hemmed in by high ochre walls that erosion has carved into overhangs, holes and honeycomb texture. The sand is golden, the water clear in settled weather, and the cliff detail alone is worth the descent — in the right light the rock looks hand-carved.

When to go: outside high summer if you want the sand to yourself, and always with one eye on the tide — high water eats most of the beach, and it can all but disappear at the biggest tides. Trail walkers should start early: the first stretch east toward the Alfanzina lighthouse is exposed and shadeless, and far more pleasant before the heat builds.

Practical texture: the stairway is the only way down, so this is not a carry-everything beach. In season there is lifeguard cover; off season you are on your own. The Seven Hanging Valleys trailhead is signed at the top and runs east along the cliffs toward Benagil and Marinha.

Who it’s for: hikers starting the Algarve’s best coastal walk. Photographers who want carved-cliff texture without fighting for tripod space at Marinha. Swimmers who don’t mind stairs. If your group splits between walkers and beach people, this is the rare spot that serves both from the same starting point.
