Algar Seco is what the sea does to limestone when it gets a few hundred thousand years to work — a clifftop field of hollows, arches and blowholes on the edge of Carvoeiro — and Boneca Bar sits right down inside it. The terrace is wedged among the wave-carved yellow rock, a few steps from A Boneca itself: the small chamber whose twin window openings frame the Atlantic like a pair of stone portholes.

From your table the view isn’t over the formations, it’s through them — sea framed by eroded arches, ledges dropping to clear water, sculpted rock in every direction. The drinks are the excuse; the geology is the point.

When to go: the hour before sunset. This stretch faces the falling sun, the yellow rock goes gold, and A Boneca’s windows hold the best natural frame on this coast. It’s no secret — the steps and ledges fill at golden hour. Seasonal opening is common on this coast — check before making the trip, especially outside summer.

Who it’s for: photographers who want the A Boneca window shot with a cold drink waiting afterwards; couples finishing the Carvoeiro boardwalk at dusk; anyone who believes a bar’s real menu is its view.

Photography Notes

  • Shooting Notes
The classic frame is the sea through A Boneca's twin windows, a few steps from the terrace. Go wide for the arches; the terrace itself makes a strong foreground against the sculpted cliff.
  • Light & Sun Notes
Faces the falling sun — the yellow limestone goes gold in the last hour and the window openings light up at sunset.
  • Conditions
Exposed rock ledges polished smooth by feet and spray — slippery when wet, and lively on big-swell days. Seasonal opening is common on this coast — check before making the trip.
