Praia do Telheiro

Praia do Telheiro is where the Algarve shows its bones. Just north of Cabo de São Vicente, at the corner where the south coast turns into the wild west coast, the cliffs put on a geology lesson you can actually see: folded, near-vertical bands of dark schist with flat beds of red sandstone lying straight across the top: two eras of the planet stacked in one wall, separated by a gap of millions of years. Geologists run field trips here. Photographers come for the stripes, the sculpted pinnacles and the low-tide rock platforms that hold reflections when the light drops.

This is not an easy beach. Dirt tracks cross the plateau from Vila do Bispo, and the final descent is a steep, loose path down the cliff: proper hands-and-feet territory in places. The reward is a strip of pale sand and sculpted rock that most Algarve visitors never see, backed by strata that look hand-painted.

When to go: at low tide, full stop. The beach and the best of the platforms disappear as the water comes in, so read the tide table before anything else. The light is best late in the day on this west-facing corner, but leave yourself time and daylight for the climb out.

Who it’s for: photographers who like their landscapes with structure, geology enthusiasts, and anyone happy to earn a beach with their hands as well as their feet. If a loose path down a cliff sounds like a problem rather than part of the day, Cordoama and Castelejo are the easier doors onto this coast.
