If you want to feel like you’ve discovered something, Praia do Beliche is your place. It’s sandwiched between the more famous Tonel and the dramatic approach to Cape St. Vincent, yet it sees a fraction of the visitors. The cliffs here are enormous — towering walls of layered rock that have been carved by centuries of Atlantic fury into caves, arches, and pockets that photographers dream about. The beach itself is smaller than its neighbours, with a rough, volcanic-black sand that tells you this coast isn’t interested in looking pretty for tourists. It’s rugged. It’s moody. And on the right day, with the right light coming off the ocean, it’s one of the most striking places in the entire Algarve.

When to go: late afternoon is magic here. The sun drops toward the Atlantic, the cliffs catch the golden light, and the whole scene shifts into something almost otherworldly. Autumn and spring give you the best odds of good weather with fewer people. Summer is pleasant but bring sun protection — there’s limited shade.

There are no facilities at the beach, but Sagres is close enough to head back for food and supplies. The beach is fully exposed to the wind — this is Atlantic coast at its most uncompromising. Photographers: bring a wide-angle lens; the sea caves and cliff formations are spectacular.

Who it’s for: photographers who want something different from the standard Algarve beach shot. Solitude seekers who want to escape the crowds but don’t want to work too hard for it — the path is easier than Monte Clérigo. Swimmers comfortable with strong currents and powerful waves. Anyone who wants to feel the raw, end-of-Europe energy that makes the Sagres area special.

Getting There & Access

  • Getting There
From Sagres, continue west past the turnoff for Tonel toward Cape St. Vincent. Beliche is signposted on the right, just before you reach the cape road. There's a small parking area set back from the cliff edge; a steep but manageable path descends to the beach. The road is narrow and winding near the end — take your time.
