Between Lagos’s famous headland and the long sand of Porto de Mós, Canavial is the cove the coast path passes and almost everyone skips: a quiet reach of sand and rock at the foot of high cliffs, with no facilities and nothing formal about the way down. The paths are informal and their condition varies, which is exactly why the beach stays near-empty while its neighbours heave.

Respect the setting: these are tall, soft cliffs prone to collapse, so stay off the base of the rock face, and the water is entirely unsupervised.

Who it’s for: self-sufficient beach-goers and photographers who want Lagos cliff scenery without another soul in the frame, and who will check the state of the access on the ground before trusting it.
