One of the pocket coves tucked into the Ponta da Piedade headland: the golden-stack labyrinth south of Lagos that we cover as its own spot. Balança is what you find if you leave the balustrades behind: a wedge of sand between sculpted limestone walls, with the same green water the headland is famous for and a fraction of its audience.

Getting down is the filter. The way in on land is steep, informal and loose in places, and plenty of visitors see the cove from a kayak instead; the paddle round from Lagos passes right by. The cliffs above are unstable and there is no supervision of any kind down here, so treat it as the wild corner of a famous place, not a serviced beach.

Who it’s for: confident scramblers and kayakers who want Piedade’s rock without its crowds.
