Ilha de Tavira

The Algarve keeps its biggest beach behind a boat ride. Ilha de Tavira is a barrier island of the Ria Formosa — no road, no bridge, just ferries and water taxis crossing the calm lagoon from Tavira. That crossing does the filtering: what you land on is a strip of sand that runs further than you’ll bother to walk, backed by dunes and a pine-shaded anchorage where sailboats swing at their moorings on the sheltered side. The contrast is the picture — green lagoon and masts on one face of the island, open Atlantic beach on the other, a short walk apart.

The photogenic material sorts into two zones. Near the ferry landing you get the pines, the anchorage and the summer bustle of the beach-bar cluster. Walk away in either direction and the crowds thin fast, until it’s dune grass, shell lines and a horizon with nobody on it. Low tide widens the sand into something that photographs almost abstract.

When to go: summer is when the island is fully alive — frequent boats, bars open, the anchorage thick with masts. Shoulder seasons trade the bustle for emptiness and cleaner light, though services wind down outside the season, so don’t count on them. Winter crossings still run, but sparsely, and the island reverts to wind and birds.

Getting the shot means committing to the boat both ways — build the return crossing into your plan instead of chasing the last light and hoping. There’s little shade beyond the pines, and summer midday out on the open sand is exposed.

Who it’s for: beach purists who measure quality in space and silence. Photographers drawn to the island’s double character — lagoon calm against ocean glare. Families in summer, when the sheltered side does the babysitting. Anyone allergic to beach access by car park — here the ferry ride is part of the point.
